I am not Russian. I grew up in Western Europe, far from Russia and the history and conflicts that continue to shape the country today.<\/span><\/p>

For most people in the West, Russia is relatively simple. We know Putin, we know the war, and we know a few opposition figures from the newspapers and television. Beyond that, Russia is often just Russia to us\u2014a country of over 140 million people that we almost never talk about.<\/span><\/p>

My own perspective has changed a lot over the last four years. Through my work with the Russian resistance movement, I have begun to speak with people I would otherwise never have met. I have discovered regional movements, people helping political prisoners, activists, volunteers, and people defying the regime directly inside Russia. Some have very different ideas about what should come after Putin, and not everyone agrees. But that, too, is part of the reality that is often missing when we talk about Russia in the West.<\/span><\/p>

Most people here have never heard of them. They know the names of a few opposition politicians, but they know very little about the much broader resistance movement around them. And I think one day we might regret that.<\/span><\/p>

In Europe, there is much discussion about what Russia should look like after Putin. Should it remain a federation? Could some regions become independent? Who could take power, and with whom would the West be willing to cooperate? I follow these discussions, but I have never felt that these decisions were mine to make. I may have my opinion, but ultimately, it is not my country. The people who live there, including the various nations and regions of Russia, will have to decide their future for themselves.<\/span><\/p>

I also understand why it is difficult to talk about Russian resistance in the West today. Russia has been waging this war for years. We have seen threats, propaganda, espionage, and attempts to influence our countries. So when someone comes to us and says, “I am Russian and I want to change Russia,” trust does not come automatically. And why should it?<\/span><\/p>

That is precisely why personal contacts are even more important. We need to know who these people are, what they stand for, and what they do. And they, in turn, need to understand us. There are things about Europe and the West that are hard to grasp from the environment of Russian politics, just as there are things concerning Russia that took me years to understand.<\/span><\/p>

I do not think we should wait for one large opposition movement or one famous figure to represent everyone. The people I have met are too different for that, both politically and personally\u2014and their visions for the future of Russia can be very different as well.<\/span><\/p>

In my opinion, this is not necessarily a weakness. It is simply something the West must understand if we ever want to seriously engage with the people who may play a role in what comes after Putin.<\/span><\/p>

And that is where I see my own place. I do not support the Russian resistance because I want to tell Russians what their country should become. That is not for me to decide. What I can do, however, is connect people, explain what I see from here, and help voices that are unknown in the West reach people who would otherwise never hear them.<\/span><\/p>

I have learned a lot during this work, including the fact that the West and the Russian resistance movement often know surprisingly little about each other.<\/span><\/p>

Putin will not be here forever. No one knows whether change will come slowly or whether things will suddenly move very quickly. But when it happens, I do not think that will be the right time for Europe to only then start looking around and asking who else actually exists besides the Kremlin and the same old opposition figures we have known for years.<\/span><\/p>

These contacts should exist before they are needed.<\/span><\/p>

Inside and outside Russia, there are already people today thinking about what comes next. Others are taking risks today without knowing if they will ever see the Russia they are fighting for.<\/span><\/p>

They must decide their future for themselves.<\/span><\/p>
