Muaz Kibishev is the only member of the Kavkaz diversionary-reconnaissance group (fighting on the side of Ukraine) who does not hide his face.
He is wanted in Russia and, in his own words, can only return home on a tank and as a liberator of his homeland – Kabardino-Balkaria. He fights on the side of Ukraine as a volunteer; the Kavkaz group is an unofficial formation of natives of the Caucasus – although they have not signed a contract with the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, they still have support from the Ukrainians, at least in the form of fuel and ammunition.
He comes from a small village near Nalchik in the Kabardino-Balkar Republic. He lived in his homeland and ran a business. When he began practicing Islam, the problems started. When a young man in this region begins to observe religious principles, it immediately attracts the attention of the so-called law enforcement agencies.
Kibishev says that at that moment, everything goes according to a template. They plant drugs or weapons, they have their proven witnesses, they take everything a person has on them, and they drag them somewhere – to a private house, to a basement, sometimes to a police station, and sometimes out into the fields. They force a confession and the signing of whatever they need.
Then they imprison such a person.
Kibishev was detained in 2014 during a joint operation by Center “E” (Center for Combating Extremism), the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the FSB. They planted cartridges, a machine gun mount, and a grenade on him. At the department, they tortured him to confess to an attack on police officers, an incident that had taken place the previous day. They wanted him to testify against other Muslims. Shocked by the torture, he signed what they wanted regarding himself, but he did not name anyone else.

In the colony, as someone accused of terrorism, he was not allowed to pray or eat normally – for the first two years, they intentionally added pork to the food so that Muslims would not eat it. They experienced constant harassment – although they did nothing, they were provoked and punished. An officer in the Chuvash colony, in response to Kibishev’s question about what they actually wanted from Muslims, replied that if they made the sign of the cross, they would leave them alone.
Kibishev is convinced that most of his fellow fighters have similar experiences and similar motivations to fight against Russia. Their unit brings together those who have experience fighting against Kremlin soldiers – in the Caucasus and abroad.
From the very first minutes of the war, they helped defend Kyiv. Later, they continued in the Belarusian direction and participated in the battles near Bakhmut. They fought alongside Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars; with the Chechen Sheikh Mansur Battalion, they formed the international corps “Kavkaz”.
Later, however, they separated; they have an Islamic structure, they do not have a commander, but an amir – a senior, naibs – his assistants, and a shura – a council. Their religion does not allow insignia – they cannot wear the flags of non-Muslim countries on their clothing.
However, they have no problems with this; the Ukrainian side respects them, they are on the front line most of the time or conducting diversionary operations in enemy territory, the generals know about their activities, and when they need support, they receive it.

What is he fighting for?
Ukrainians are fighting for their home, for their country, for their families, for peace. Caucasians – for the weakening of Russia. Like Donbas and Crimea, the Caucasus is occupied territory, but our homeland has been occupied for much longer. It is an opportunity to harm a common enemy, so why not take it. Our goal is to help our religion, help ourselves, and help the Ukrainians.
After all, we are striving for the liberation of the Caucasus so that it can live according to the norms of Islam and have good relations with its neighbors. Such relations with Russia are a priori impossible. For Ukraine, the Caucasus is a good neighbor. We have never had problems together.
Ukraine assumes that unrest and coups will begin in Russia. But they forget that neither the Volga region nor the Siberian peoples will rise up until the Caucasus catches fire. Until we – not each nation and republic individually, but the entire Caucasus – rise up, the rest will sit and wait.
Perhaps because we are here, Allah will have mercy and something will change in the Caucasus as well.
