monitoring the resistance movement against the Russian regime

The Magnificent Eight website has been monitoring the resistance against the Russian regime since the spring of 2022. Behind every logo or chevron are real people. We do not judge them. We do not judge their motivations or methods. We map the process by which civic dissent transforms into a liberation struggle under totalitarianism.

Every initiative and every personality of the resistance movement has its own “profile” on our site and is displayed on the map, in the smart article archive, and on the connections page. We are continuously adding new personalities and initiatives.

The page publishes everything it can translate on the topic, including interviews and original texts by direct participants in the resistance movement. On the map, you will also find specific events—both in time and in context.

The goal is clear—to show the strategic, geopolitical, and human context of the resistance movement in one place—and to give everyone the opportunity to form their own idea of who is fighting, with whom, against whom, and for what.

We present to you an existing, living resistance movement. In real time.

ABOUT THE MAGNIFICENT EIGHT

The name of the project was inspired by the eight brave people who protested on Red Square in 1968 against the occupation of Czechoslovakia. Anna Valentová is working to make sure that today’s brave people are not forgotten. And I think this deserves support and attention. It is not enough to point out what is negative. We also need to nourish and strengthen what is positive. I am deeply grateful for projects like this one, and in my view this subject has so far lacked good coverage here. That is why I support it.
