Statement of the Free Russia Forum on the so-called “elections”.
In September, another farce called “elections” will take place in Russia. Kremlin political managers always work to create the appearance of intrigue and competition. We are currently witnessing this in connection with the possible participation of the Yabloko party. Previously, we saw similar attempts to create an illusion of competition through the participation of Sobchak, the New People party, and others.
And again we hear statements from some of our long-time colleagues and partners in the political struggle against Putinism, calling on voters to vote for Yabloko. Russian citizens are, of course, free to choose whoever they want in this pseudo-election farce, which is de facto not an election, but a re-election of the State Duma and legislative bodies. However, calls to mobilize around any figure in such “elections” are, in our opinion, a manifestation of naivety, inertia, or dishonesty.
Russia is also holding elections in the occupied territories. This is therefore not just another demonstration of the so-called “Putin majority,” but also an attempt to legitimize Russian territorial seizures. Calling for participation in these “elections” through one’s own engagement means voluntary participation in a political spectacle whose purpose is to demonstrate that the majority of Russians support the Kremlin’s course—that is, the continuation of the war.
Real elections in Russia are only possible after the victory of Ukraine, the defeat of Putin’s regime, the liberation of occupied territories, and the dismantling of the dictatorship. Participation in the current farce only aids the enemy.
The task of the “Russian opposition” today is to support Ukraine and cooperate toward the complete defeat of the regime in this war.
