We Are the Black Folk
Беҙ – ҡара халыҡ | Beҙ – ҡara khalyҡ
The Bashkir partisan movement. Its name means “We are the common people,” and although the literal meaning of the word ҡара is “black,” the phrase is perfectly clear to every Bashkir. The movement’s name refers to a linguistic trick used by the authorities against political prisoner Fail Alsynov—they distorted the meaning of the phrase and accused him of using the word “black” in a derogatory sense.
