There are dates we must remember. August 30 is Anna Politkovskaya’s birthday.
I went to her house on Lesnaya Street. To the house where she lived and where she was killed. There was nothing there. They had removed the memorial plaque and painted over the spot where it had been. It was just an ordinary entrance. Only a small icon appeared there; it wasn’t there a few days ago.
I had nothing with me. I went to the Komus store, which was nearby. On the way, I ran into Sasha. We were happy.
We returned to the house. Sasha wrote in red marker on a piece of paper from a notebook: “Anna Politkovskaya was killed here.”
We brought two carnations. We created a very small memorial.
Sasha later said: “People come here, they read, they ask each other about Politkovskaya. It is just like at the Boris Nemtsov memorial.”
Anna Politkovskaya (August 30, 1958 – October 7, 2006) was a Russian journalist and publicist, a long-time reporter for the newspaper Novaya Gazeta. She became famous primarily for her investigative texts on the war in Chechnya, human rights violations, torture, kidnappings, and corruption. For her work, she faced repeated threats, detention, and poisoning; in 2004, she was poisoned on her way to Beslan. On October 7, 2006, she was shot dead in the elevator of her apartment building in Moscow.
